The Shaft Twisters originated as a group of BMW and Moto Guzzi riders from Wichita and South Central Kansas in 1981. A lot of us attended rallies together and like to camp. We were a bunch of raconteurs, too. If you don't know that word, look it up - you might be one, too! We were in our third year as an informal group at the 1984 BMW MOA (Motorcycle Owners of America) National Rally at Missoula, Montana, when we finally decided to get MOA recognition. We did, and are Charter Club #137, with a home base of Wichita, Kansas. We are also a chartered club with BMWRA (Riders Association), #67.
Along the way, we've picked up active members from Kansas towns outside of the Wichita metropolitan area such as Chanute, Topeka, Olathe, Canton, Altoona, and Halstead. We even have dues-paying members from California, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and yes, Germany. Most of our original members are still active - some still riding the same bikes they had when this whole thing started back in 1981.
